Everyone's guilty secret = The cupboard under the stairs...
Sometimes tidying up this kind of area can make a big difference for more space in other rooms.
As always, we got everything out, sorted, subdivided and prioritised. This time there were no everyday-use items.
1. Winter shoes
Meaning that Mrs DM will be accessing these items this coming autumn, and probably 3-4 times a year maximum.
2. Guests' slippers
Only needed when there are some visitors. It could be once a week for one pair of slippers, or just a few times a year for multiple pairs of slippers. It's easy to forget to prepare this kind of thing until a visitor asks for it, so they shouldn't be far back at the end of the cupboard.
3. Lots of miscellaneous items
I just subdivided these items into two categories: rather long shapes and the rest.
Things like some rolls of paper, unidentified sticks or any sort of long things went into one box, and the rest (including unopened picture frames, hoover accessory bits and many more items) went into another box.
4. Alcohol bottles
They are now going into the kitchen, where Mr DM can have all his lovely bottles in one place.
Now the miscellaneous item boxes are right back at the far end, and the shoes are towards the back in a reachable area where we can basically see all of them. The slippers are just on the left-hand side of the door.
Finally, we can see some floor space in the cupboard!
I didn't want to waste the extra space we created, so we decided to allocate it for items which are used a little more frequently. Nappy and wipe stocks, were moved from the storage space in the toilet.
Note:
- This job took less than an hour.
- We kept the cardboard boxes to be used as storage solutions.
- The reason for filling the newly created clear space ( it is making it difficult to reach other items at the back) is because this is not an everyday cupboard. We can make the most of the space.
