The very first impression of Mrs DM's house was 'Where shall I start first...' Things were a bit all over the place though it wasn't that messy. I was trying to establish the focal point of the live-in kitchen-diner.
There was a spacious extended kitchen-diner that was filled with things all over the place. After having a look at all the other areas, I realised that the focal point of the room was the dresser display cabinet. The furniture seemed to be the main reason for making the room look untidy. It wasn't displaying much but piled up documents, cables, kids' homework and toys. The space had been used to put everything aside as a 'temporary' solution, but this became a long-term problem.
As always, we got everything out, sorted, subdivided and prioritised.
Mr and Mrs DM seemed to be very keen to make a proper filing system for their paperwork, but we kept concentrating on sorting things into categories. Filing can be done by Mr and Mrs DM once the room is tidy!
Now the shelves are a better display area for Mr DM to play with, I strongly recommended not to put anything on the main surface of the dresser. That is the key to keeping the room look tidy.
The high priority items are now reachable with one action, and Mrs DM also got her own drawer space.
Kids' art station is situated lower cupboard, where they can reach when they would like.
The paperwork piles are also situated lower cupboard, when Mr and Mrs DM determine to do it, it is within their reach but a bit hidden.
Now move on to the children's toy boxes. There were really good storage solutions, but a little bit overfilled.
Having some identical items lined up can create a neat impression.
This time, we put the two identical boxes on top of the shelf to create 50% more space (as well as looking neat).
This is now a better way for children to get nappies, a quicker way to reach some study books, and the easiest way to tidy up toys by themselves.
Note:
- This job shown took about 3 hours for the area shown including the initial consultation.
- Mrs DM didn't buy any new storage solutions for this job.
